Learn how Osteopath treatments can reduce and eliminate shoulder pain for good!

Do you suffer from Shoulder Pain? Osteopath treatment can help

One of the common issue our osteopath treatment assess is Subacromial bursitis, this is inflammation of the subacromial bursa. The bursa is located in the shoulder underneath the clavicle and stops bone on bone contact. The patient will usually feel sharp pain on certain movements, such as reaching quickly behind the back or lifting the arm above the head. The patient may also feel pain in the lateral aspect of the shoulder.

Subacromial bursitis is generally caused by microtrauma or overuse of the shoulder joint. If it is an overuse injury, the patient will often have associated tendinopathy and/or impingement. The condition can also be caused by a trauma, such as falling on the shoulder or getting hit in the shoulder. Many people can also experience subacromial bursitis from side-sleeping for extended weeks.

An osteopath can help with subacromial bursitis as they can help reduce the pain, loosen the muscles that may be affecting the area, and also help to decrease inflammation in the area.

Generally an osteopath treatment will consist of:

  • Soft tissue through the back, neck and shoulder muscles
  • Myofascial release through the underarm muscles
  • Traction of the shoulder
  • Soft tissue to the biceps, triceps and pec muscles
  • Sometimes an osteopath will do a lot of work through the neck, such as neck manipulation and stretching

For follow up, an osteopath will give you some stretches and/or exercises to do at home to maintain and strengthen the area. Depending on what is mainly causing the pain, the exercises may differ.

  • Subscapularis stretch
  • Trap stretch
  • Circumduction weighted circles
  • Shoulder front raises
  • Shoulder lateral raises
  • Scapula stability wall push ups
