Why do you do what you do?

Our behaviour dictates who we are. It is one of the strongest predictors for what we think, and for what is important to us in our life. In fact, it is not what you say which is reapply important, it is how you act, treat yourself and others, which is the true representation of who you are,

People often say one thing, but if there is no synergy with their behaviour, what they say means absolutely nothing. Talk is cheap. So when you say- I have to lose weight, or- I want to get fit, or- I need to improve my health, just saying it does nothing to help achieve your goal.

In fact, even setting a goal can sometimes be a complete waste of time. All coaches and motivational people say you have to have a goal, make it specific and measured, with a time frame, and you cannot fail. Well, this is not true. Thousands, and I mean THOUSANDS of people set smart goals every day, yet fail to meet them. The reason is- their WHY was not big enough.

When looking at setting a goal, one of the first questions I ask is- WHY do you want to achieve this goal? The reason we ask this is because, if the WHY is not inspirational, if it is not motivational and it is not important enough to the person to change their current behaviour, then they will not achieve the goal. It is that simple.

So, ask yourself- What is important in your life? What gets you up in the morning and makes you go to work? It interests me that people will get up and go to work, five days a work, doing a job they hate, but they won’t do a simple action to improve their health. Obviously the WHY of going to work is bigger than the WHY of needing to exercise.

So, WHY would you exercise?

Weight loss is the obvious answer to this question. But what about being healthy? What about having energy? Being able to get through the day feeling alive, rather than merely surviving it. The benefits of exercise are one and many, yet the message seems to fall on deaf ears. It is like the WHY does not mean anything to people.

So I ask you again- what is your WHY? What is important enough in your life to live for?

Is it your family, your children perhaps? Do you want to walk your daughter down the aisle, and be around to enjoy your grandchildren? Is your WHY to have a quality of life good enough to actually enjoy your retirement? Is your WHY to have a life free of pain?

At the end of the day, all of these why’s sound good, but do they inspire you to get off the couch and change?
