Why is incidental Exercise So important?

Take the stairs, walk to the shops, park on the far side of the car park and walk, all of these statements I am sure you have heard at some time. The fact is all of these statements are examples of incidental exercise. Incidental exercise is the general movement you do in everyday life. Yes this includes lifting, carrying, mowing the lawn, walking the dog and other work based activities you do to get through the day.

Incidental activity will increase your active metabolism, which will lead to you burning more energy, hence burning more fat. SO here are some things to consider to improve your active metabolism

  1. So how many steps do you do per day?
  2. How many flights of stair did you walk each day?
  3. How much time did you spend standing and moving around during the day.
  4. What can you do to increase your general steps and activity levels.

With technology today it has never been easier to measure your activity levels, so let’s be honest with each other- are you hitting 10,000 steps a day? Chances are if you are sitting down for the majority of your work day then it is difficult to hit this target, so what can you change. A thirty minute walk at lunch is a great way to get 2-3km of walking (3000 steps). Maybe walk to the train station  or to a train station that is a little further away? There are 100s of ways to increase your movement we just need to starting doing it.
